Empowering the Indigenous People of Zambales: A Journey of Education and Hope at Saint Francis Learning Center

In the heart of Zambales, Philippines, the Saint Francis Learning Center Foundation, Inc. (SFLC) has been a beacon of hope and education for the Aetas, the Indigenous People of the region, since 1995. Founded by the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (SFIC), SFLC is dedicated to the holistic development of the Aeta communities, empowering them through education, leadership training, and the preservation of their rich culture.

A Legacy of Education and Empowerment

The mission of SFLC is clear: to provide a transformative education to the Aeta children and adults, enabling them to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. This year, the foundation continues to expand its reach, offering formal education from kindergarten to high school, and even college for those who aspire to pursue higher education. With 153 students currently enrolled, including 10 college students, the center is making strides toward empowering a new generation of Aeta leaders, skilled professionals, and cultural advocates.

The foundation has built three dormitories to accommodate students from distant villages who face the daunting task of walking up to ten hours to attend school. The dormitories have been a game-changer, allowing these children to focus on their studies in a safe and nurturing environment. With the guidance of house mothers and fathers, the students are provided with daily supervision and care, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive academically and personally.

Expanding the Reach of Education

In addition to the main learning center, SFLC operates several satellite schools in remote areas such as Alibang, Cawag, and San Martin. These extensions bring education to children who would otherwise have no access to formal learning. SFLC also provides literacy and numeracy training for adults, empowering them with practical skills that enhance their livelihoods. The non-formal adult education program, coupled with leadership and livelihood skills training, helps the Aeta community become more self-sufficient and resilient.

SFLC’s contributions extend beyond education, as it actively works to preserve and enrich the Aeta's cultural heritage. The foundation’s integrated socio-economic, cultural, and spiritual programs ensure that education is not just about academics but also about fostering a deep sense of identity, pride, and community spirit among the Aeta people.

Challenges and the Path Ahead

While SFLC has made significant strides in uplifting the Aeta community, the journey is far from complete. The foundation faces ongoing challenges, including the need for sustained financial support to meet the operational costs of the school, including teacher salaries and student sustenance. They are also in urgent need of a vehicle to facilitate transportation for educational activities and to bring essential supplies from Metro Manila and Zambales.

Despite these challenges, SFLC continues to inspire hope. The school’s success has been recognized nationally, with the Catholic Education Association of the Philippines awarding them the prestigious "Most Inspiring Small School Award" at their 2024 National Convention in Davao City.
